Membership Information & Applications
Membership Application Procedures for the Monadnock Composite Squadron
Cadet Applicants (Ages 12-18)
Prospective cadets may apply for Civil Air Patrol membership online. To start the application process, the prospective cadet must attend three weekly cadet meetings before applying. At the first meeting, the Squadron Commander will meet with parents and the prospective cadet to answer any questions. Attending the three meetings allows the cadet a chance to see our program in action and decide if CAP is right for them. After the third meeting, the unit commander will give the applicant a code for the online application. Parents and cadets may then go online and complete the membership application by clicking the button below. National Membership dues ($38) will be required at the time of application (payable by credit card**). Once the application is complete, it is electronically sent to the unit commander for review. The commander will then set up a meeting with the new cadet and parents welcoming them to the squadron. At that time, proof of identity (birth certificate and social security card or U.S. Passport) will need to be shown to the Squadron Commander and squadron dues will also be collected ($85). This fee covers the cost of the initial uniform insignia and membership dues.
**Paper applications for cadets may also be used if you must pay by check or do not wish to apply online. Below are the Monadnock Composite Squadron applications that can be mailed in to National Headquarters with a check for membership dues ($38). Two file types have been posted below (MS Word and PDF) in case you are unable to open one of the file types, you can try the other. The form should be filled out and printed if possible. The completed form must be brought to the squadron at a weekly Thursday meeting for the Unit Commander, Lt Col Peter Hughes to review and sign.
For either electronic or paper applications, prospective cadets will need to bring in proof of identity, such as a birth certificate or passport as well as their Social Security Card to the commander. Cadets will also be required to pay CAP National Headquarters dues in the amount of $38 payable to National Headquarters - Civil Air Patrol and the uniform fee and squadron dues in the amount of $85, payable to NH Wing Civil Air Patrol. These must be submitted with the application with two separate checks. The initial squadron dues will cover the cost of insignia, belt, nametags, etc... for the two uniforms (U.S. Air Force Blues and BDU's) and the first year of squadron dues ($36/year). One set of U.S.A.F. Blues will be provided at no cost. Used BDU's may be provided by the squadron depending on limited supply. Cadets will be required to purchase their own black leather shoes for the "blues uniform" as well as combat boots for the "BDU Uniform." Uniform accessory items may be purchased from Vanguard, Civil Air Patrol's only approved retailer of merchandise. Some uniform items may be available at local retailers. You may see a list of uniform items below.

Civil Air Patrol Cadet Information
If you would like to learn more about the progression and promotions that the cadets can achive througout their cadet career, you can look at the "Stripes to Diamonds" page of the National Headquarters Cadet Programs site. It is referred to as "Stripes to Diamonds" because, fo each achievemet the cadet earns, new insignia are worn to recognize their CAP grade. For instance, Cadets start out as a "Cadet Basic," wearing no stripes, but after their first promotion to "Cadet Airman," they earn one stripe worn on each collar. The second promotion is two stripes, etc... Until the cadet passes their Billy Mitchell Award, becoming a cadet officer and obtaining the grade of Cadet Second Lieutenant, which is one silver circle (pip) worn on their shoulder epaulette. The last achievement in their cadet career is the Carl A, Spaatz Award, or Cadet Colonel, in which three silver diamonds are worn on the shoulder epaulettes. Thus, the "stripes to diamonds" page. Please see Help for New Cadets for pictures of the insignia. The "Stripes to Diamonds" page will tell you everything that is required to accomplish, to earn each promotion. You can see this very informative page by clicking the following link: http://capmembers.com/cadet_programs/stripes_to_diamonds/
New cadets in the program will have a lot of questions. The staff of the Monadnock Composite Squadron is always available to help, but many of the answers you may be looking for already can be found on the CAP National Headquarters "New Cadet Help" page. You can find this page at the following link: http://capmembers.com/cadet_programs/new_cadet_help/
Below is the "Cadet Journey" that has been adopted by NH Wing Cadet Programs. It outlines the progression of opportunities a cadet can expect from the program over the first two year period. You will notice that there is a meaningful, exciting opportunity for each season. At these events, the cadet will participate not only with other cadets within the squadron, but other cadets in New Hampshire Wing and beyond. Sometimes cadets from Vermont, Massachusetts and even as far away as Texas have participated! These are great learning tools which will provide excitement in the program and a lifetime of memories that will help them all through their lives.

Civil Air Patrol Senior Membership at the Monadnock Composite Squadron
There are three types of Civil Air Patrol Squadrons; A Cadet Squadron, a Senior Squadron and a Composite Squadron. A Senior Squadron is comprised of only CAP Senior Members (adults age 18 and older) and hosts senior member programs. A Cadet Squadron is comprised of mostly cadets and senior member supervisors and conducts all three missions of CAP, but mostly Cadet Programs. A Composite Squadron is made up of Cadets and Senior Members and conducts senior member and cadet programs.
Here at the Monadnock Composite Squadron, we concentrate on Cadet Programs However; Senior Members are always needed to fill a variety of duties in the Cadet Programs area. Some duties are as simple as supervising cadet activities or driving cadets to activities in CAP or personal vehicles. Cadets are always supervised by at least two senior members (more if possible or depending upon the number of cadets needing supervision at an activity). Civil Air Patrol has a strict Cadet Protection Policy that the new senior member will learn after the application is accepted. There are other duties that are necessary for the smooth operation of the squadron. These duties can involve working with the cadets or not. To name a few of these duties, there is a need for a Finance Officer, Transportation Officer, Supply Officer, Communications Officer, Administrative Officer, Personnel Officer, Emergency Services Officer and more. For details on these positions, you can see CAP Regulation 20-1 below.
Please contact Lt Col Peter Hughes using the contact form at the bottom of this page if you are interested and can help the squadron cadets by filling one of these important duties.
The time commitment is as much or as little as you like. You do not have to attend every meeting. In fact, some positions may not require you to attend any meetings if you choose not to, unless there is a staff meeting or a finance meeting. Even those occasions do not require attendance at every meeting. Of course, we welcome you to attend every meeting to participate with the cadets in any capacity. The more Senior Members that are involved, the better the quality of our cadet programs. After all, the goal of the Monadnock Composite Squadron is to grow tomorrows leaders.
Senior Members are not required to wear the Air Force style uniform, but are required to wear another CAP authorized uniform while at a CAP activity. Senior Members that meet the Air Force's weight and grooming standards are authorized to wear the Air Force Style Uniform only at a CAP activity when authorized by the Squadron Commander in advance. CAP uniforms for Senior Members can be as simple as a CAP golf shirt, worn with your own black shoes and socks, black belt and plain gray slacks. There are also other options that can be found in the CAP Uniform Manual above.
